Threads for Hope

Threads for Hope is a fashion show that is hosted for the AIDS Foundation. This year I had the pleasure of presenting a dress with co-designer Steven Kissinger. The event was well managed by the IADT Stitch club. Everyone that assisted them had a specific job. It was less choatic than the last show I helped with, maybe because this time I was one of the designers and didn't have to worry about anything other than the model, Sadie Haas, and her hair and make-up. Our outfit was Tommy Hilfiger inspired with a "Chicago" the musical finishing touch. Vintage, I would say. Nonetheless, all the dresses came out beautiful, and the models performed perfectly. It was my pleasure to be a part of such an event.

Fashion Week

This past week was fashion week for San Antonio. There were so many events to go to. Unfortunately, for me, most were at night and I had class and was unable to attend. I was, however, able to attend one of the shows, Couture on a Budget at Hotel Indigo, as volunteer. This show was interesting, but I would like to talk about the backstage events. Obviously, with the craziness that goes on with make-up, hair, outfit changes, line up, and jewlery there needs to be some organization (my specialty). Because I wasn't running the show I didn't want to "step on toes," so my attention went to the orders of the President of the Stitch club at the International Academy of Design and Technology. She a bright woman, but unfortunately her skills in running an event where lacking. No specific position were given to assistants, no schedules were timed out, and the line-up was done shortly before the show. Now, don't get me wrong I respect her and did everything she had me do. I'll be honest, there was a moment were I paniced because no one in the line- up was in order. The assistants were mixing the girls and the clothes and I lost where we were in the line-up. This was not good. Backstage management is important.

This is what I would do different.

Instead of 4 assistants to change the girls I would use 3. One to undress, one to dress, and one to verify touch-ups and place back in line. Everyone, including make-up, hair, models, and assistants, would have to arrive 5 hours earlier. If the volunteers/ assistants can not make it to the meeting or rehearsal on time for what ever reason they should not be included in the process. This is because they won't know what is going on and will only confuse everyone else. Eliminating confusion is the key point. If they want to attend the show free of cost then they would need to speak to the sponsor of the club on how to do so. Arriving late, specially as an officer, is unacceptable behavior and will be seen as unprofessional for the club and sponsors.

The first hour would be dedicated to organization and position clearification. Assigning everyone to a specific position will create less confusion.

The second hour will be dedicated to understanding their jobs. The 3 assistants in the changing line and the models will rehearse getting in to and out of the outfits. The make-up artist and hair dresser wil be on call behind scenes for touch-ups.

The third hour will be lunch, everyone eats at the same time, so A.) there isn't anyone about to pass out, B.) everyone is satified, and C.) everyone is back and the same time and is ready to continue.

The fourth hour is hair nd make- up time. Half the models get set to hair and the other half to make-up. Then they switch. Meantime assistants will stuff bags and review a detailed guest list, which will include actual names as well as the company's name. Just a word of advise, most companies now have a website that has pictures of their top managers, which are usually the ones that attend, so this list may include pictures to match the names. There should be at least 4 assistants, with radios, for this list. Each assistant should be placed at each corner of the seating and should also radio each other of who they sitted.

The final hour before the show starts is for dressing. All models report backstage and get into their first outfits and jewlery. Once dressed the models should be placed in the line-up accordingly.

Now the line up should go not only from shortest to tallest, smallest to biggest, but also in order of changes. For example, you have 8 models and 5 models are to repeat, then the 5 repeating models for first. This is common logic. So when the first repeat goes, she is changed and put back in line and so on. Smooth and easy.

Preparation is all the necessary. Remember Ladies and Gents, the Truth hurts.

Shoes for Fall

Hello Ladies,

Ok, lets talk SHOES!! I've always loved boots, therefore always loved fall and winter. I'm into the tall boots, but of course I have to get the next biggest size because of my huge calves. Well, this season I don't have too. Although, tall boots are still in and are classic to the season Vogue.com shows us the ankle and calf boots are in this season. Not just that, straps, lace-ups, and vintage booties are the cutest ever! For the bigger calf woman, like me, I suggest the ankle booties to define your calf more and give it a slimmer appearance. For thinner legs, definitely use the calf or tall boots to provide a fuller look. I hope this helps.

Vogue's 100 under $100

Hello Ladies,

Are you wondering what to wear for our size fit this season? Vogue.com's 100 under $100 has listed tweeds and plaids, Rocker/Biker Chicks, and Military.

For us plus size and odd size women becareful on the fit. Usually, the tweed pants will ride up the front if purchased too small, but look baggy if too big. What you want to do is purchase the bigger size and taylor the crouch. Unless, you want to do the Devil Wears Prada diet and only drink and eat a cube of cheese when you want to pass out. LOL. Trust me Ladies "Camel toe" is NOT sexy. I would also try purchasing tweed pants at Lane Bryant because they size you for the right pants.

Christopher Bailey sets the new Biker look for Burberry Prorsum. This look is great for edgy women. Not PROFESSIONALS!! Restrain yourself from using this look in the workforce, unless you are Beth Chapman. The only thing I would say about this one is stick to black. If purchasing a white biker jacket then please accessorize with a Black scarf, gloves, and boots.

For the younger generation, Girls military colors. This is hunter greens and browns. The look back in my dad's day was to layer it. If you are big breasted use less scarves and more belts. Definately boots!! Ankles are in but military can access the knee highs and thigh high boots. For skinny legged women like my mommy, use leg warmers over your boots to give full ness.

Well, Ladies I hope this helps. Some helpful accessory tips use less scarves on the bigger breasted and more belts. If heavier in the waist and smaller breasts use less belts and more scarves. If thin legged use leg warmers with your tall boots. If big legged use jeggings with ankle boots.

Fashion Sketching II Final Project.

Ok throughout this term we have been focusing on floats and rendering fabric swatches. The final project was a men's line. Obviously, not what I want to do since I want to design for plus size women. So, thinking men's line...the first thing I thought of was Michael Jackson. Now, I know Vogue had a designer do a tribute to him within the last few months. So after listening to The Essentials album I decided to do a suited looked in tribute to his Smooth Criminal video. After two weeks, its done! The professor loved it. I made an A. PHEW!! lol check it out on my twitpic site http://twitpic.com/photos/OddSizeFashion . Remember the truth hurts. Always True, Agatha Marie

"Marc Jacobs goes plus-size"

Just when I decided it was time to study my dream, here comes Marc Jacobs launching it! Wow, the intimidation is "Fierce" as Steven Kissinger would say. But, I think I have the advantage in this department since I have been plus size all my life. Da...da...da...!

Mini Dresses

Ok ladies, We want to be sexy too, but mini dresses are for those girls that strave themselves all day and night so they can look like celebrities. Us plus size ladies should not wear dresses, or skirts for that matter, so short. Why? Well, for the obvious, WE ARE BIGGER! There is more of us to cover. Trust me, purchase the knee length dresses and the mid-calf skirts. Any shorter than that and your whole fanny will show! Just your friendly advice from you San Antonio plus size lady. Remember the Truth Hurts.

Plus Size Tops

Ladies of the big breasted,

I know that we can not wear certain things, such as turtlenecks, round collars, and cowl collars, because we have "bigger is better" breasts compared to those barely there breasted women out in Hollywood. However, I am adding to the list of what not to wear, which is the Diamond shaped blouse. This blouse, though cute in its ways, is a non-symmetrical blouse and can make our breasts appear to "old" when they are still perky. Designers try to "enhance" the style given to plus size women by creating similar trendy tops to those of "average" body figures. Unfortunately, this struggle is still a fight for style. If you like the "enhancement" given to by these blouses I advise you to stay along the straight line of the Empire waist. This will perk the ladies up rather than drag them down. Just the honest advice from your San Antonio plus size lady.

Good luck and remember the Truth hurts.
